Dentures in Apex, NC
Are you missing teeth? Here at Twin Leaf Dentistry, we specialize in providing affordable full, partial, and implant dentures for patients. While many dentists have to refer out patients looking for this service, Dr. Brace’s training with "false teeth" allows her to offer several cost-effective denture options in Apex that restore the appearance of your smile.
Dentures provide a great restorative dentistry solution for the replacement of missing teeth. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and improve the form and function of your smile.
The Types of Dentures We Provide
Complete dentures, also knowns as full dentures, are a removable prosthetic appliance that will replace all of the teeth in an arch. These dentures are typically made of acrylic material and are custom made to fit your mouth. The fit of a denture is important. An ill-fitting denture can shift, cause sores, affect speech, and even fall out while eating or speaking. Complete dentures can be fabricated in a single step (immediate) or in multiple steps (conventional method). Conventional dentures are made after all the teeth have been removed and the gums and underlying bone have healed; this usually takes 4-6 weeks. During this time, the patient will go without teeth. Immediate dentures are made in advance and placed immediately following the removal of teeth, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will be needed to ensure a proper fit.
Partial dentures are used to replace several missing teeth but some natural teeth remain. A partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting. These partials are custom designed to replace any and all missing teeth in a single arch. The framework of a partial denture is comprised of either metal or acrylic material and may have small clasps which are used to anchor the appliance onto the remaining natural teeth.
Implant-supported dentures are used to replace some or all of the teeth in a single arch and will be secured in place via implants. Implant dentures combine the stability of implants with the convenience of dentures. These dentures will require the longest time commitment as a specialist will need to surgically place the implants first, then allow adequate time for the implants to integrate with the jaw bone, and finally the dentist will deliver the custom-made denture. The benefits of implant-supported dentures includes securing the prosthetic in place (no loose dentures) and helping to prevent bone loss.
Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear. Complete and partial dentures must both be removed daily for regular cleaning and maintenance. Rinsing dentures after meals will help prevent buildup. Using a soft-bristled brush and nonabrasive denture cleanser (not toothpaste) to clean your dentures daily will help maintain them.
Reasons for Dentures:
Enhancing aesthetics — improve smile and increase confidence
Maintaining oral health — prevent tooth shifting and alignment issues
Restoring function — improve eating, speech, and digestion
Preserving bone structure — prevent bone loss (implant-supported dentures)
What does getting dentures involve?
The process of getting dentures requires several appointments, usually over a period of several weeks. Highly accurate impressions (molds) and measurements are taken and used to create your custom-made denture. Several “try-in” appointments may be necessary to ensure proper shape, color, and fit. At the final appointment, your dentist will precisely adjust and place the completed denture, ensuring a natural and comfortable fit.
It is normal to experience increased saliva flow, some soreness, and possible speech and chewing difficulty initially, however this will subside as your muscles and tissues get used to the new dentures.
You will be given care instructions for your new dentures. Proper cleaning of your new dental appliance, good oral hygiene, and regular dental visits will aid in the life of your new dentures.
